Building Shelters

Creating a Neighborhood

A Place to Call Home

One of the objectives at Birchview Haven is to provide safe outdoor shelter that is warm and dry. Many of the cats that will come here are unlikely to be adopted either because of behavioral issues or because they are too wary of people to do more than watch us from a safe distance. So it is important that they have places they will feel safe in.

The bulk of the shelters we plan to build will be placed along the paths we have marked throughout Birchview Haven's mostly wooded land. These paths are maintained and monitored. Some shelters will be built on the ground while others will be set on the lower branches of sturdy trees.

The shelters we will be making will be constructed from discarded and/or donated materials. If you are interested in donating materials, such as pallets, roofing material, reflective foil insulation, nails, etc. we encourage you to fill out a contact form, visit our Amazon wish list, or email BirchviewHaven@gmail.com.

There are blueprints for shelters available here for free through Fiver Cats (an organization that works on behalf of feral and FIV+ cats). If you want to build one for wandering felines in your own neighborhood, or are interested in adopting a FIV+ cat, there are links and resources available through Fiver Cats.
